This, however, under the condition that it is technically feasible. It is up to the individual municipalities to decide.

Minister for Energy Claude Turmes stated on Thursday that if a municipal council decides to turn off the lighting on municipal roadways, the Bridges and Roads Authority will do the same. According to the Ministry of Energy, turning off street lights for four hours every night, when almost no one is on the road, may save about 30% of electricity each year.

This principle was agreed upon by the Ministry of Energy, the municipalities, the Bridges and Roads Authority, and the energy supplier Creos.
