Things have finally been moving at Rousegaertchen for the past few weeks. The underground car park at Place des Martyrs closed after the fire on 9 September 2019, which caused major material damage to the ceiling of the car park.
However, this is only the first phase of work linked to the fire, as the City has decided to undertake further renovations of the car park in February 2022. The cost of the project is 22.5 million euros.
The City’s objective is to reopen a car park that meets the new safety and comfort standards for users for the next fifty years. The renovation work was supposed to start at the beginning of the year and be completed by 2024, but it is far from being on track.
The renovation and modernisation work on the car park cannot yet start as the project is still in its ‘tender phase’, as the City explained to our colleagues at RTL 5minutes.
An expert study had shown that numerous water infiltrations had degraded the structure over the years. As a result, the major renovation project includes the renewal of the drainage system, the renovation of the access ramps and stairwells, the construction of a new entrance and lift, and the fire protection of the structure. A 90-minute protection period will have to be guaranteed.
The car park had 440 spaces before the fire. After the work, there will be only 350 spaces. Twelve of these will be reserved for electric cars.
