On Thursday, the funding law concerned with waste-management firm Superdreckskëscht was approved in the Chamber of Deputies with 31 votes from the majority parties. MP Marc Goergen from the Pirate Party has since declared the law illegal, noting that an expert opinion commissioned by the Pirates showed that a new bid invitation needs to be launched.

According to the opinion, there is also a potential conflict of interest concerning the former director of the Environment Administration, explained MP Goergen: “We believe there is clear proof for a conflict of interest, seeing that the son of the director was appointed by the Superdreckskëscht academy. We don’t see how Minister Welfring could possibly justify this.”

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Joëlle Welfring has since promised to follow up on the case in both internal and external manner. Furthermore, she has committed to answering the questions of MPs in the Chamber.

The Pirates are however not satisfied with the Minister’s response: “It is normal that members of the government answer the questions of MPs, so what she announced is nothing new.” Furthermore, they criticise that there had already been an audit, which failed to operate by international norms.

The Pirate Party argues that there are three ways for clearing up the situation. Since the government has refused both an external audit conducted by international experts and the launch of an enquiry commission, the only avenue left is to have the justice system step in.

MP Goergen announced: “If the justice system fails to treat the case, then we will file an official request for them to launch an investigation.”

In any case, the Pirates intend to disrupt the status quo, believing that parts of the government coalition agree with this position: “It feels as though DP and LSAP are not yet ready to close the case, but the Greens seem to want to sweep it under the rug.”
