The L'Orangerie restaurant in Oberpallen has stopped serving Coca-Cola in an effort to promote sustainable local products.

The Pall Center close to the Belgian border, which includes the restaurant, is attempting to become more sustainable by increasing the selection of local products and avoiding those made by industrial giants.

Former Green MP Christianne Wickler, who is director and owner of the site, explained that the move away from multinationals has to happen gradually: "Otherwise we risk scaring away customers. We no longer serve Coca-Cola at L'Orangerie, but people can still buy it at the supermarket."

Wickler further noted that the change is clearly contributing to a more sustainable, local, and healthy supply chain.

One of the few positive impacts of the pandemic is people's increased turn towards regional products, Wickler said. This may be more costly, but clients also seem to feel the benefits of a healthier diet. She elaborated that Pall Centre officials therefore spend a lot of time examining suppliers to make the best possible choice.

Wickler concluded that the changes are not designed to "teach people a lesson, but rather to offer an alternative and show that it is possible to consume differently".
