172 people requested international protection in Luxembourg in the month of March, according to a new report issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For the first time in the last two years, March's figures reached pre-pandemic proportions, as 127 requests for asylum were lodged. In March 2019, 220 requests were filed, compared to 116 and 82 in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Over 100 of the requests came from Syrian nationals, followed by Eritrea (9), Venezuela (7) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (6).

More than 450 people have sought asylum in the Grand Duchy since the start of the year, with refugee status granted to around 36.4%.

In March, 10 people were transferred to other EU countries in line with the Dublin Regulation, while eight were brought to Luxembourg under the same ruling.
