In 2022, this festivity, which is very popular with the Portuguese communities in Luxembourg, the Greater Region, and abroad, will not be held in the traditional way on 26 May.

The last editions before the Covid-19 pandemic had gathered between 15,000 and 20,000 worshippers. The organisers wanted to be cautious for the 2022 edition and have therefore decided not to organise the “classic” pilgrimage.

On Wednesday 25 May, an inter-community rosary prayer is planned in the evening, which will be livestreamed online and broadcast by Radio Latina. On Thursday 26 May, Ascension Day, the church in Niederwiltz will be open to all for personal prayer. At about 6pm, a festive mass is planned with Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich. Like the rosary prayer, it will be broadcast by Radio Latina and can therefore be followed from home.

Other religious festivities

On 7 June, the Echternach Dancing Procession will take place on Whit Tuesday. Groups are asked not to gather in front of the abbey courtyard, and the organisers advise against participating in group activities after 2pm.

The Octave begins this Saturday in Luxembourg City and will last until 22 May with Father Theo Klein as preacher. After a two-year break due to the various health measures taken in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mäertchen is also back this year. However, it will take place on Place de la Constitution around the Gëlle Fra monument, due to construction work on Place Guillaume II.
