Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot has stated that the government remains '100% committed' to the Google data centre project in Bissen.
Fayot provided this information in his response to a parliamentary enquiry, filed by MP Laurent Mosar from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV).
Although the appeal filed by Mouvement Ecologique was definitively rejected, it has taken more than three years for Google to get the necessary legal certainty to start constructing on the land they purchased in Bissen.
Three years are a long time, explained Minister Fayot, further noting that the data economy sector is moving particularly fast. In the meantime, Google has already announced and completed other projects in different countries.
One of these projects is located in Wallonia, which may indicate a strategic reorientation for Google, warned Minister Fayot. Nevertheless, he underlined that during talks with the tech giant, there has been no indication that the project in the Grand Duchy is to be cancelled.
Google must now present construction plans for the property in Bissen. Should the tech giant decide not to build a data centre, then the government will have the option of buying back the land at the original selling price.
Minister Fayot stressed that the land should not remain empty for too long, but expressed confidence that this can be avoided. The government remains "100% committed" to the project, he concluded.
