Plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables is to be banned in Luxembourg supermarkets from 2023.

The new waste law, which the Chamber of Deputies is scheduled to vote on next week, has one clear goal: to make it as easy as possible for people to produce less waste. It mainly targets packaging and single-use products, placing a greater responsibility on the state, municipalities, and the private sector.

Several unnecessary packaging materials and single-use products will be phased out over time, with plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables set to be banned from 2023. From 2024, all major supermarkets must also set up various recycling containers.

The law will affect the hospitality sector, with take-away and deliveries targeted. Restaurants will have to switch to 'eco boxes', which are reusable. According to the draft bill's rapporteur, François Benoy, restaurants could charge their customers an additional fee, which is reimbursed when they return the boxes the next time they visit the restaurant or place an order for delivery.

From 2023, the use of single-use plastic cups, plates, and other disposable items in public celebrations and festivals will be forbidden. From 2025, only dishes than can be washed and reused will be allowed at such occasions.

MPs are set to vote on the law next Wednesday. The first changes will take effect on 1 January 2023.
