Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer made this statement on Wednesday morning in the context of the reception of Ukrainian refugees.

The issue was at the centre of 'CityBreakfast' at City Hall. According to the most recent estimates, 4,500 Ukrainians have arrived in Luxembourg since the start of the war, 1,500 of whom are currently living in refugee structures in the capital.

Polfer explained that the last structure that was set up is the tent city in Kirchberg. She pointed out that this is only a "temporary solution", as another state-owned building will be renovated in the near future. The refugees will eventually move on to another building in Contern.

Aside from the refugees who are housed in reception structures, 423 Ukrainians are currently registered at an address in the capital. Polfer also spoke about integrating Ukrainian children into the Luxembourgish educational system, noting that, at the moment, only 12 children are enrolled in the capital's primary schools.

According to the mayor, everything possible should be done to return a certain normality to the children. It was also pointed out that, from the outset, the Luxembourg City Municipal Council had made the former school in Clausen available to the authorities. However, the ministry ultimately decided to turn it into a language school for adults, Polfer explained.
