According to UNICEF officials, solidarity has reached unprecedented levels.
The Luxembourg Red Cross and Caritas are both active in the Grand Duchy, Moldova, and Ukraine itself.
Both organisations report record donations: The Luxembourg Red Cross has collected €2.2 million in the last five weeks, while Caritas reports donations "close to €2 million".
The Luxembourg Red Cross is mainly active around Donetsk, as Luc Scheer explained to our colleagues from RTL Télé. The organisation will need funding of about €100,000 per week to sustain the project, which mainly consists of providing material support, until late July 2022.
Solidarity has reached unprecedented levels, UNICEF officials confirm. UNICEF has collected a total of €10 million and considers that its teams will be needed "for many years to come".
All the organisations say that despite these record donations, more money is needed. They hope that donors will remain supportive and committed.
Swimming for Ukraine
Last week, the children of Troisvierges swam for Ukraine. Pupils from local schools swam roughly 6,548 lengths, which is equivalent to 163.7 kilometres. The swimming lengths were sponsored by families and friends. The event raised a total of €30,000.
The cheque was given to Caritas. The population in general is currently "very committed and generous," according to the NGO.
With this money, Caritas not only takes care of the refugees who arrived in Luxembourg from Ukraine, but also of those who found refuge in Moldova, a neighbouring country of Ukraine.
