Almost 1,000 children have reached Luxembourg after fleeing from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On Thursday, officials from non-profit organisation LUkraine convened for a roundtable discussion, where they took stock of the support already given to their home country.
Over the course of two and a half hours, 15 different speakers addressed the war in Ukraine and the resulting refugee crisis. LUkraine spokespeople also used the opportunity of the roundtable to discuss further support needed in the war-torn country.
Since the Russian invasion started, more than 460 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been delivered to Ukraine and more than 300 refugees have been personally picked up at the border region and transported to the Grand Duchy.
Around 4,000 Ukrainian refugees have applied for international protection in Luxembourg since the start of the war. As soon as they arrive in the Grand Duchy, LUkraine provides direct support to help people with administrative tasks and settle in.
The department for foreign children at the Ministry of Education has so far processed the applications of 950 Ukrainian children aged three to 19. From there, it is decided where they can stay and which schools they can join.
