On Monday morning, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum spoke to our colleagues from RTL to discuss the implications of the unfolding refugee crisis.
Minister Asselborn believes that many more Ukrainian refugees will still come to the Grand Duchy. At the moment, there are more than 1,300 available beds in Luxembourg's refugee support centres, but more are planned to be installed at Luxexpo in Kirchberg and in Contern. The politician expressed gratitude to the mayors of both municipalities for their cooperation.
Minister Asselborn also drew attention to the fact that private households have also begun taking in people who escaped the war in Ukraine. Every applicant for international protection has a right to €200 per month, regardless of whether they live in private homes or public institutions.
When asked about the ongoing war, Minister Asselborn expressed his belief that President Putin got rid of his conscience. He further said that the situation is extremely painful since a military intervention from the West would only bring about a complete escalation of the war.
