EducationTeachers' unions decry chaos in schools since the break

Many teachers are off sick and even substitutes are hard to find.

Around 9% of educators are signed off at primary schools and around 8% at secondary schools. Some tutoring and reception classes have had to be cancelled.

Teaching properly has become difficult, not helped by the constantly changing rules. Still, union reps agree that homeschooling should only be used as a last resort.

New rules now apply when someone tests positive in a class. There is no general quarantine of contact cases among the kids anymore. However, it is not quite as simple as that, as a number of additional criteria apply.

After just one positive case there are daily rapid tests. This is obligatory for non-vaccinated students to attend class in person. Additionally, rapid test coming out positive no longer has to be confirmed by a PCR test, but the person must immediately isolate.

The different scenarios resulting from this - whether one, two or more people also test positive - are still reported for the statistic, but no longer play a role for quarantine - at least until a “scenario 4" comes into play.

Speaking to students, they agree that do not want to go back to remote learning. But the constant changes cause confusion and uncertainty.
