According to a report by the Luxemburger Wort, six Luxembourg residents are still awaiting evacuation from Kabul, Afghanistan, as of Tuesday.
Four Luxembourgers and two Afghans resident in Luxembourg will be "evacuated as soon as possible", according to reports.
The Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed they are currently working alongside Belgian counterparts to deploy a Luxembourgish military aircraft for the emergency repatriation mission. It is thought they are discussing the best way to make use of Luxembourg's A400M military plane, which forms part of the Belgian fleet based in Melsbroek. However, the plane does not possess the require safety certificates and licences to land in Kabul.
Sources say the military transport could be landed in one of the neighbouring countries, then transported to Kabul with a different plane, in order to repatriate the four Luxembourgish citizens and two residents.
Many countries have been organising evacuation flights from the Afghan capital over the past few days to transport diplomats and their Afghan colleagues since the Taliban seized power. France has been able to repatriate around 45 nationals as of Tuesday morning, while Germany's Bundeswehr has evacuated seven.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn is due to participate in virtual meetings with his European counterparts on Tuesday to plan the evacuation going forward. The ministers will also discuss potential diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
