On Thursday, Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg presented the sectoral targets to achieve these ambitious results. These targets were approved in the form of regulations by the State Council last week.

Each sector now knows how much CO2 it will have to eliminate from its activities in the coming years. The sectors concerned are industry, construction, housing, agriculture, waste treatment, and finally, transport, which obviously represents the largest share of the work. 200 measures are planned in these different sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as the construction of the tram or the development of electric mobility as well as the network of bicycle paths.

If these measures do not achieve the expected results, a scientific group, which has yet to be set up, will have to make further proposals. Penalties are not foreseen if these targets are not met, but the Minister explained that these national regulations represent a “concrete action” against global warming.

Dieschbourg concluded by explaining that it is not a question of paying for pollution but of integrating a real dynamic into environmental protection, something which is “urgently needed”, especially following the recent meteorological events in the greater region.
