On 2 July, the State Council decided to donate vaccines through the COVAX programme to support other countries in the fight against Covid-19.

350,000 doses of Johnson&Johnson, AstraZeneca, and mRNA vaccines are to be donated to Luxembourg's cooperation partners.

The exact distribution of the doses is yet to be determined.

As of late June, EU member states have donated over 2.5 million vaccines to developing nations.

In a statement published on Tuesday, the Directorate of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action and the Ministry of Health stated that the goal of the donation is to show solidarity and ensure a more equitable access to vaccines.

In order to prevent the emergence of new variants, the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that at least 10% of the population of every single country must be vaccinated by the end of September, and at least 30% by the end of the year.

So far, 14% of the world's population has received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, but the rate varies significantly from country to country.
