During a joint press conference on Monday morning, two transport unions made a number of proposals to help expand the northern railway network.
Industrial zones should be better linked to the system to help reduce the number of lorries on the streets, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the National Federation of Railway Employees (FNCTTFEL) argue.
Georges Merenz, president of FNCTTFEL, explained that, for instance, the route between Bissen and Ettelbruck, which is currently only in use for goods traffic, could be opened up to passenger traffic.
This would help create a further connection between Bissen and Diekirch, and eventually reduce the number of busses needed in the region.
The organisations further proposed to expand the route between Clervaux and Troisvierges in both directions, although this would mean that the planned cycling lane project in the region would need to be halted.
Merenz commented: "We are not able to maintain the needed capacity and some stops already had to be dropped because of timing issues."
He further noted that a cycling lane would also be more scenic if it went through the forest instead of adjacent to the rails. If this proposal were to be accepted, a fast connection with the Belgian city of Liège would also become possible.
Officials at the press conference also underlined that their proposals are intended to be constructive and not a form of criticism. The Ministry for Mobility and Public Works is already investing a lot, and those involved in transportation want to contribute to the improvement process.
