After 26 years of active membership, during which Engel filled a variety of official roles, the former CSV president announced his departure from the conservative party on social media.
Engel also stated that he intended to address his former colleagues on Friday, but that the CSV leadership denied his request: “This refusal explains, I believe, why I no longer can or want to stay a member of this party.”
The politician further announced that the issues of the country, Europe, and its people will continue to be on his mind. He is now looking forward to new challenges ahead.
Engel recently conveyed in an RTL interview that he is in fact considering to launch a new political movement with like-minded people. However, at the moment he is still the subject of a preliminary investigation, which was launched by his former colleagues a few weeks ago.
On Saturday, a new party president will be elected during the CSV national congress. MP Claude Wiseler is expected to win the race in absence of any formal opposition.
