Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development Romain Schneider provided an official response to the enquiry by MPs Hatmann, Bauler, and Baum. Low temperatures and the accompanying frost at the beginning of April caused damage across some of the Grand Duchy’s vineyards, mostly affecting the grapes for Chardonnay and sweet wine.

These grapes are cultivated over more than 75 hectares, while the total area of wine production spreads across more than 1,300 hectares. 270 winemakers operate these grounds, and most are insured against frost damage. Nevertheless, damage costs can only be estimated at the end of the month, Minister Schneider further explained.

Similar damages also affected around 100 hectares of fruit cultivation fields. Cherry and pear trees suffered most under the cold temperatures.
