Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch and Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer unveiled plans for the new stage connecting Gare with Bonnevoie.

Now that the tram is successfully connecting Kirchberg with the central station in Gare district, the next segment will further link the public transport to Bonnevoie. Officials hope that construction work will be completed over the course of 2022.

On Monday afternoon, Minister Bausch and Mayor Polfer unveiled the details of this new segment during a press conference, including aspects such as stops and urban designs.

September 2022: Station - Bonnevoie

By September 2022, the tram route will be extended by 1.2km from the central station to Lycée de Bonnevoie, with two additional stations: 'Leschte Steiwer/ Dernier Sol' and 'Lycée Bouneweg'. The latter acts as a hub where passengers can switch to other forms of mobility, such as buses, bicycles and trains, or easily access P+Rs.

The tram will take the widened Buchler bridge and then head towards the redeveloped Thionville road on the part between the Buchler bridge and the junction towards the new N3. It will run alongside the new N3, an urban boulevard between Route de Thionville and Rangwee, to reach its future hub at the Lycée de Bonnevoie.

The aim was to retain a set of names representative of history and to favour the use of the Luxembourgish language. The name of the new tram station "Leschte Steiwer / Dernier Sol" refers to the 19th century and to the hostel "Um leschte Steiwer" located in the street of "Dernier Sol". A 'Steiwer' was a small coin. When the peasants of Hesperange and Ban de Roeser returned from the town market, they would have spent their last "penny" in this inn, located outside the old fortress on their way back to Hesperange.

Late 2023: Bonnevoie - Cloche d'Or

Construction work on the tram line between the Lycée de Bonnevoie and Cloche d'Or will continue in the first half of 2022 and conclude in late 2023. This new 3.7 km section will offer five new stations, including two multimodal hubs.

The stations will be: Scillas, Howald Gare, Lycée Vauban, Waassertuerm and Stadion/Cloche d'Or. Here, Howald Gare, and Stadion act has transport hubs.

The government, Luxtram and the Roads and Bridges Administration emphasised that attention will be paid to urban integration, with vegetated parts inbetween stations.
