Schifflange is located in the Esch-sur-Alzette canton and consists of an area of around 8 km2. It has the third-most residents per square metre in the Grand Duchy: 1,346 to be precise, only beaten by Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg City. Municipal officials expect the town’s total population to grow to 14,000 residents by 2030.
One of the key aspects of Schifflange’s redesign is school infrastructure. The municipality currently has three schools and one day care centre (Maison Relais). 1,100 pupils are currently enrolled, with the number expected to increase to 1,500 in the near future, meaning that additional space is needed.
Both the Albert Wingert and Lydie Schmit schools will be expanded, while a completely new school will be built in the “Op Hudelen” neighbourhood. Once completed, up to 1,800 students will be able to enrol in Schifflange’s four schools.
The local swimming pool, handball and tennis halls, as well as the gymnasium have all seen better days, which is why a new sports and cultural centre is to be built on Rue Denis Netgen. A private developer is said to have put forward concrete plans. The plans would require the construction of a new road, which would go straight across FC Schifflange’s current football field.
Mobility is another important element in the town’s restructuring. 2/3 of all traffic originates from activity within the town itself. Plans for a shared space are being considered as well as a new road, which is meant to “channel” the local traffic.
In the near future, individual residents and workshops will be able to submit their own thoughts on the changes happening in their town.
