Buergbrennen bonfires will be permitted this year on 20 and 21 February, but the Ministry of Health has communicated that strict sanitary measures remain in place.

Gatherings may not exceed 100 people. As of 4 people masks are obligatory for all participants. 2-metre distance must be maintained if over 10 people are present. Food and drinks are prohibited.

The Buergbrennen bonfires are an age-old pagan tradition later incorporated into the Roman Catholic calendar. The fires represent rebirth, mark the end of winter and are meant to melt away the snow of the old year and herald the coming of a new season. Read our Knowledge Bite here.
