Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn stated that if Portuguese authorities requested it, the Grand Duchy was ready to take in patients to relieve the burden on Portuguese hospitals.

On Tuesday, the government confirmed that Luxembourg would be willing to take in Covid-19 patients to relieve Portuguese hospitals. In an answer to a parliamentary question, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn said that so far the Portuguese authorities had not approached the Luxembourg government to make such a request. However, if the request were made, the Minister stated that "the various possibilities for patient transfer could be considered".

Over the course of the crisis, Luxembourg took in numerous patients from the French Grand Est region. In this context, MPs Sven Clement and Marc Goergen from the Pirate Party referred to the "high pressure" under which Portuguese hospitals were currently finding themselves, while mentioning the fact that hospitalisations had "halved in Luxembourg". The MPs urged the government to consider a transfer of patients from Portugal in the name of "the very deep links between Portuguese and Luxembourg citizens".

However, in his answer, Asselborn insisted on the fact that the number of patients that could be treated should be defined "in consultation with the various hospital establishments according to their capacity".
