Currently, if you want to get to the museums on foot from the Grund you must still divert via the Red Bridge. The Kirchberg Fund is therefore planning a footbridge that will allow pedestrians and cyclists to take a faster shortcut.
Preparation work has been under way for several weeks in the woods between the bastion near the Pont Rouge and Draï Eechelen. Wooden posts have been installed to simulate the route of the future footbridge.
Once finished, the bridge will stand on three pillars and pedestrians will be able to walk high up inbetween the tips of the trees. The Nature and Forestry Administration has been involved in the project from the outset in order to preserve the small wooded area that the bridge crosses through.
The footbridge will be made of stainless steel. Thanks to the material and its design, the structure should quickly become one of the capital's attractions. Fewer than ten bridges of this kind exist worldwide, particularly of this size and made entirely of stainless steel.
Work will begin in autumn 2021. The individual parts will be pre-produced in a workshop and erected on site. According to the Luxembourg Roads and Bridges Authority, the construction work is expected to take 18 months.
