Military satellite projectMPs feel they have been lied to during hearings

A dozen meetings of the Committee on Budgetary Control have already been devoted to the massive budget extension for the observation satellite project.

The amount initially planned in 2018 for the purchase of the satellite, its launch and management was €170 million. In the meantime, it has almost doubled to €309 million.

The MPs of the Committee on Budgetary Control will meet just before Tuesday afternoon’s plenary session to appoint two rapporteurs, who will draw up a preliminary report in the course of the week, which will present the Commission’s initial conclusions on the history of the LUXEOSys dossier.

In recent months, the MPs of said Commission have already heard the current Minister of Defence, François Bausch, his predecessor, Etienne Schneider, who launched the military satellite project before the legislative elections of 2018, as well as from representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the army and LuxGouvSat.

According to the website of the Chamber of Deputies, some MPs went so far as to state that they felt they had been lied to during the various hearings, so obvious were the contradictions.

The bill that authorises the budget extension for the LUXEOSys project has to be approved on Wednesday morning by the MPs on the Defence Committee, so it could be voted on as early as next week in the Chamber of Deputies’ plenary session.

MPs should therefore have the preliminary report of the Committee on Budgetary Control at the time of the vote, so that similar projects can be carried out in the future with greater transparency and fewer contradictions.
