Director of the Tax Administration"Corona tax" for businesses which profited from the crisis: Guy Heintz

RTL Today
The honorary director of the Tax Administration spoke to RTL on Friday morning.

The former director wants to put a new option on the table regarding the issue of wealth taxation: a “corona tax” for businesses which profited the most out of the change of circumstances. Heintz explained that a similar strategy had already been put in place after World War II.

However, Heintz had his reservations about the possible introduction of a tax on direct inheritances, which was recently brought up by CSV president Frank Engel and led to a disagreement within the conservative party. Although surprised about Engel’s statements, Heintz welcomed his open approach to start a discussion, since he believes especially rich people will still find other arrangements to evade the tax in the long run.

When it comes to private taxes, the former director is more favourable towards the idea, given that sufficient data is provided to properly assess each case. He further believes that private homes should remain exempt from the rule and that the communication channels between banks, insurance companies, funds, and the administration needed to be improved, since bank secrecy remains an important aspect of the Luxembourgish system.
