The director of the Social Housing Agency (AIS) was a guest at RTL Radio on Tuesday morning.

1,200 families are currently on the waiting list, while only 570 apartments are at the agency's disposition.

Although the landlords working in cooperation with AIS are willing to accept lower rents for their properties, they still often try to arrange short-term contracts to have the flat at quick disposal.

Hempel explained that the agency is moreover facing difficulties to transition their clients from low-income housing to the general market, especially since prices are continuing to climb.

AIS therefore decided to create its own infrastructure. A first housing project with seven apartments will be finished in Niederkorn by the end of November.

The long-term goal of the agency is to accumulate at least 50 flats of that kind. Hempel thus argued that AIS could establish itself as a valuable contributor in the social housing market.
