National health fundNormal hospital activities cannot be pushed back due to Covid-19

RTL Today
The director of the National Health Fund (CNS) sat down with RTL for an interview on Tuesday morning.

During the interview Oberlé underlined that it is the CNS’ mission to manage funds and question spending. Since the beginning of the pandemic, hospitals have required more financial support to adapt to the novel situation. Nevertheless, CNS, the ministry of health, and the association of hospitals all agree that normal activities can no longer be pushed back to dedicate more attention to Covid-19. A balance between reasonable and necessary decisions thus needs to be found to successfully manage the situation from a financial perspective.

CNS has already authorised the hiring of 50 additional staff members. Contrary to the period of the initial outbreak, the CNS has now been involved in every step of the discussion and decision process. Oberlé therefore remains positive about the prospect of future cooperations and adequate solutions despite the financial limitations.

“Cash up”

It is currently estimated that CNS will report an annual deficit of around 560 million euros. If no change in direction were to be taken, all reserves will be used by the end of next year, Oberlé explained. He emphasised that the priority during the second infection wave remained the further spreading of the virus.

The National Health Fund is thereby determined to cover potential costs, but needs some form of governmental support to do so. Oberlé pointed to the 2007-2008 financial crisis, where the administration decided to lower the legal reserves and freeze tariffs. A different path would be the elevation of contributions, a move that Oberlé wants to avoid since the crisis has already made life more difficult for people.
