After a number of issues at the popular Upper Sûre lake, including overcrowding and littering, the authorities in charge of the surrounding area decided to limit places on a reservation basis.
From Wednesday 22 July visitors have been able to reserve a spot at one of the lake’s six beaches, with over 2,200 reservations in place for this weekend alone. Up to 5,000 reservations can be made per day, applying to weekends only.
However, Marco Schank, mayor of Esch-sur-Sûre, did not think the new measures were sufficient. He said he did not know if visitors could be trusted to follow health guidelines and protect the environment in and around the lake, and the restrictions would only work if guests paid attention to the rules.

RTL’s TV team gathered opinions from members of the public concerning the new measures, with the majority expressing confidence in new regulations, particularly as cases are continuing to rise in the Grand Duchy.
As long as visitors use common sense, Schank said it could continue, but the authorities would not hesitate to take action if the situation got out of hand.
