
Prime Minister Xavier Bettel confirmed the news on Tuesday morning, following extended negotiations at one of the most tense summits in recent years.
Upon exiting the summit, he said the amount offered could have been reduced if the budget had been revised downwards. However, he said the balance struck was the right one, and expressed his content at the solidarity and recognition shown.
On Sunday, the Luxembourgish PM said he had rarely seen such diametrically opposed positions in EU talks. The four day impasse eventually came to an end on Tuesday morning, when leaders agreed an historic recovery plan worth 750 billion euros.
Emmanuel Macron and Sophie Wilmès also expressed enthusiasm, with the former stating this was an historic day for Europe, while the latter said the European Union had never before invested in the future in such an ambitious way.
