The Luxembourg-Belgium federation of car manufacturers and importers demand new measures to encourage buyers of new cars.

The automotive sector, which was hit hard by the pandemic and related safety measures, devised an action plan that was handed over to lawmakers. The ailing industry hopes that governments will introduce new measures that will encourage consumers to renew their vehicles.

The proposed measures could take the form of tax benefits, bonuses for the purchase of new vehicles, and scrappage bonuses.

Guido Savi of FEBIAC Luxembourg argued that "these measures would support the automotive sector, which employs more than 13.8 million people in Europe, and accelerate the rejuvenation of Europe's vehicle fleet."

The action plan aims to safeguard public health while minimising the economic impact on the sector. Digitisation and carbon neutrality are also two key principles deeply embedded in the fabric of the suggestions. According to the authors of the action plan, the proposed measures can help to lay the foundation of a sustainable economy by investing in the latest technologies and innovations.
