Video - eerily silent cityCoronavirus lockdown leaves Luxembourg City streets deserted

RTL Today
Luxembourg's usually so bustling city centre has turned silent as virus fears grow and precautionary measures increase.

One of our readers has compiled a video documenting this historic metamorphosis. Bob Van Zandt lives in Luxembourg City and captured the footage while going for a walk in the deserted capital.

“I think we take for granted that the people, along with the energy they bring, add so much to the heart and soul of the city. Their absence leaves an strange hollow feeling - almost eerie. I can’t wait to get our city back!,” Bob wrote to RTL Today.

He added: “I was really impressed by the people who were walking about yesterday - they really made an effort to socially distance themselves. It’s a bit awkward, but we’re all still getting used to this temporary new normal.

“The inspiration came from my wife when she shared a short clip of another town which inspired me to document life in Luxembourg.

“I’m an expat but I’m thankful to be living in Luxembourg during this time of crisis. I’m so impressed by Xavier Bettel’s leadership, how quickly the government has responded (despite endless ambiguity), and the commitment of the Luxembourg people.

“My hope is, when the life reopens, we make an extra effort to spend more time with friends and family and cherish the moments we have together. It’s easy to let a busy life get in the way of spending time together.

“Additionally, when we get to the other side of this I hope we don’t forget those first responders, nurses, doctors, etc who will have spent weeks/months on the front line doing all they can to help - they are the heroes.”
