Transport is one of the sectors which has been most affected by strict coronavirus measures.

According to an estimate by the European Commission, 80,000 EU citizens are currently stranded outside the borders of Europe.

In an interview with RTL, the Minister of Transport, François Bausch, assured that the Luxembourg government will help Luxembourgers and residents to return home.

The repatriation of European citizens and solidarity between states were among the topics discussed on Wednesday afternoon by European transport ministers, during a video conference devoted to the current situation.

Bausch said in regards to Luxembourg's Findel airport, from Monday nothing will change for the passenger sector.

However, the cargo sector is crucial, and European ministers agreed that everything must be set in motion so that the transport of goods does not risk collapse.

Situations such as that on the German-Polish border, where trucks are stuck in a 60 kilometre traffic jam, must be avoided.

The Luxembourg government is in close contact with Cargolux, Luxair and the unions, in order to maintain activity at the Findel Cargo Centre.

Despite the crisis, there must be sufficient staff to unload the freight planes, some of which transport medical equipment to Luxembourg.
