Luxembourg lags behind other European countries when it comes to renewable energies despite ongoing pushes for more investments in greener energies.

According to new statistics released by Eurostat, renewable energy accounted for 21% of the total energy used for heating and cooling in the European Union in 2018.

Sweden stands out with close to two thirds (65%) of the energy used for heating and cooling in 2018 stemming from renewable sources. Latvia, Finland, and Estonia are also leading the pack.

Luxembourg ranked poorly. Renewable energy used for heating and cooling only accounted for 9% of the total energy used. Only Belgium (8%), Ireland (6%), and the Netherlands (6%) performed worse.

The tale of woe is a similar one for electricity consumed in 2018. More than half of the electricity consumed in 2018 was generated from renewable sources in Austria (73%), Sweden (66%), Denmark (62%), Latvia (53%) and Portugal (52%).

Only 9% of the electricity came from renewable sources in Luxembourg.
