An amendment to the state budget foreseeing pay rises for the staff of Members of Parliament was unanimously accepted by the parliamentary commission on finance and the budget.

As outlined in the coalition agreement, the secretarial allowances paid by each MP to their members of staff is due to rise from 2020 onwards. The secretarial allowance per staff member will rise by €2,800 per month to a total of €6,500, corresponding to the starting salary of an A1-ranked civil servant.

The state budget amendment was unanimously accepted on the basis of the decision made by the Chamber of Deputies' office which concerns the Chamber's budgetary allocation. Currently, 47 civil servants work for the seven political groups in the Chamber of Deputies and are paid via secretarial allowance. In practice, these staff members are paid via a pool collected by the Chamber of Deputies, whereby MPs authorise the Chamber to transfer this amount to the political group on the basis of working contracts.

Additionally, political factions and groups are able to hire their own staff members, although these parliamentary secretaries do not work for MPs directly. Instead, they are paid via credits which are transferred directly to each political group.
