The Belgian monarch has only carried out such a state visit to the Grand Duchy on one occasion so far. Preparations have been ongoing for six months, with the Belgian ambassador to Luxembourg providing details at a press conference on Friday afternoon.
The Belgian delegation will be made up of 200 people, covering aspects such as politics, economy, education and culture. Jean-Louis Six, the Belgian ambassador, explained the visit would express a positive message regarding Belgian and Luxembourgish cooperation in a time when Europe appears to be in crisis.
Six also revealed the royal couple and their accompanying delegation would travel by train from Brussels, arriving in Luxembourg City on Tuesday where Grand Duke Henri will greet his cousin at the station. Palatial protocols will then take place, before a reception at the town hall in the early evening, followed by an event at the palace.
On Wednesday, the Grand Duke and the King will meet at Herrenberg, to pay homage to those who lost their lives while in military service. Later, both heads of state will visit Bourglinster and Neumünster Abbey. In the evening, the Belgian king will host a concert at the Philharmonie.
On Thursday, no fewer than 23 bilateral accords are to be signed, before a visit to the Moselle. Themes such as digitisation, sustainability, space travel and audiovisual collaboration will be the main focuses of the day.
