Not everybody goes on holiday for the same reasons, or even, goes on the same types of holidays. Some like to shake it up and go somewhere new, others prefer sticking to the same place and the same activities. Ranging from city trips to relaxing weekends, Statec has enquired about the holiday preferences of Luxembourg’s population aged 15 and above. The figures presented by Statec have come from the last study taken on hobbies and holidays in 2017.

1. Relax to the max

Naturally, the main goal of Luxembourgish residents heading on holiday is to relax. Nearly one out of three individuals (31.9%) focus on relaxing as their main activity when they head out of the Grand Duchy.

If you break activities down by time, the importance of relaxing is accentuated - relaxing activities take up 63.9% of activities undertaken during holidays.

2. Prioritising family and friends

Every one out of four residents (25.1%) makes the most of their holidays to visit either family or friends, according to the Statec enquiry. Given the expatriate population of Luxembourg, this is hardly a surprising statistic.

And of course, when you do go all the way to visit family and friends abroad, you obviously don’t ditch them to go do something else entirely. Consequently, spending time with friends and family becomes the main activity, taking up 35.7% of residents’ time.

3. Culture - when the time strikes

Only one out of ten residents (11.2%) decide to take holidays exclusively dedicated to all things culture. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the remaining residents object to any cultural activities.

Even if the main focus isn’t cultural, Luxembourgish residents spend around 30.2% of their time visiting local cultural areas.

4. Active holidays

9% of the Grand Duchy’s residents have another motive for their holidays, namely sports-based holidays. These individuals tend to be passionate about going on hiking trips, water-based sports holidays, and more.

Granted, the rest of the country’s residents are likely to join in being sporty on holiday. After all, people enjoy skiing (not in the summer, mind) and even sailing, representing 19.4% of the activities of some residents.

5. Event-based breaks

Finally, 4.3% of Luxembourgish residents go on holiday with something very specific in mind - namely events including festivals, concerts, and other spectacles. Obviously, they’ll get up to other activities, but this would remain the main motive.
