Cases of deaths where the cause is given as euthanasia or assisted suicide will be equated with natural deaths in future, rather than suicides.

This news was confirmed at the government council on Thursday. The revision to the 2009 law will play a role in life insurance cases, which require eventual conclusion.

The law requires the patient to be in a medical situation to which there is no cure, linked to unbearable physical or psychical suffering, without the prospect of improvement.

Between 2009 and 2010, there were 5 reports of euthanasia in Luxembourg. For the period from 2011 to 2012, this number was 14, then 9 in 2013, 7 in 2014, 8 in 2015, 10 in 2016, 11 in 2017 and 8 in 2018.
