2025 kicked off with persistent rain and chilly temperatures. Rainfall levels were double the average, and the sun remained elusive, resulting in very few hours of sunshine.

January 2025 was a cold and rainy month, with limited sunshine. The weather station at Findel recorded significant rainfall, particularly on 8 January, which was the wettest day of the month with 23mm of rainfall. Snow also made an appearance, briefly covering 4cm upon the ground.

But how did the rest of the month unfold? How often did we get to see the sun, and how does this January compare to previous years?

To answer these questions, we have gathered detailed data on temperatures, precipitation, and sunshine hours.

Temperatures

January temperatures were slightly above average but remained within a moderate range, without any extreme fluctuations. The highest temperature recorded at the Findel weather station was 12°C on 6 January while the lowest dropped to -7.1°C on 14 January.

The warmest January on record was in 2007, with an average temperature of 4.9°C, whereas the coldest was in 1963, when the monthly average stood at -6.3°C.

Rain

With 151 mm of rainfall, January was exceptionally wet – 211% above the average recorded at Findel between 1991 and 2020. The wettest day was 8 January, with 23 mm of rain, which also saw the highest snow accumulation of the month at 4 cm.

The record for the wettest January was set in 1995, with 197.1 mm of precipitation, while the driest occurred in 1996, with a mere 6.3 mm.

Sunshine

Sunshine was scarce with only 43.2 hours of sunlight recorded at Findel – the monthly average of 52 hours was not reached. The second half of the month was particularly gloomy, marked by persistent fog and overcast skies

Wind and snow

The highest wind gusts in January were recorded on 6 January, reaching 87km/h, making it an especially stormy day. Snowfall was minimal, with just 4cm on 8 January and only three days of snow overall. However, the Administration of Technical Agricultural Services (ASTA) station in Reiler reported 5.8cm of snow as early as 2 January, and light snowfall persisted for nearly half of the month.

Number of rain and snow days

In January, there were seven icy days, where the temperature stayed below 0°C for the entire day. Additionally, there were three snow days. The month saw 18 days of rain (with more than 0.1mm of precipitation), 17 of which recorded over 1mm, well above the average. One particularly stormy day occurred on 6 January, with wind gusts reaching 87km/h.

Conclusion

January 2025 was marked by persistent rain, overcast skies, and slightly milder-than-usual temperatures. Rainfall levels were notably higher than average, while sunshine remained a rare occurrence.

Luxembourg continues to experience high-pressure conditions. After a chilly night with temperatures dipping to -7°C, the new week approaches and more fog is forecast, ushering in a colder and even grayer period.
