It is official, the redevelopment work on Place Guillaume II will begin in January. The municipality of Luxembourg City confirmed this during the latest edition of the City Breakfast on Wednesday morning.
The works will start on 11 January and will last until the beginning of 2023. The capital’s mayor, Lydie Polfer, stated that “a large part of the work” is expected to be completed in the first few months of 2023.
Polfer announced that the first visuals will be unveiled to the general public on Friday, as she wanted to present them to local residents first.
The announcement also brings about the relocation of the “Stater Maart”, which will be held on Place Emile Hamilius and “its surroundings” on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7.30 am to 2 pm, this from 13 January 2021 until the end of the works.
A market that will be “easily accessible on foot, by bicycle, by public transport, and by car” stressed the municipal representatives on Wednesday morning. In particular, they mentioned the tramway, the nearby car parks, and the Vél’Oh stations in close proximity.
The municipal representatives also took the opportunity to launch a call for applications in the framework of their “pop-up stores” programme.
Interested designers, artists, shopkeepers, or start-ups will be able to submit their applications via a form available on the municipality’s website from December 2020 until 31 January 2021 included.
The selected shopkeepers will be able to open their doors from 1 March 2021 in two locations, both 45 square metre in size. The minimum rental period is set at six months, with an option to extend for a further three months. The amount of the rent ranges from €650 to €2,250 and will vary “according to the specific situation” of the entrepreneur or shopkeeper in question.
It was also confirmed that the pop-up store concept would be extended to include Quartier de la Gare, specifically Avenue de la Gare. A call for applications will be launched “in the near future”.
The free parking offered in the Wedell and Neipperg car parks will be extended until 31 January 2021.
In a press release, the municipality specified that the first hour of parking would be offered from Sunday to Friday, while on Saturdays the offer would be extended to include the first four hours. The amount corresponding to one hour or four hours respectively will be automatically deducted from the total amount to be paid when using the automatic pay stations.
Finally, municipal representative Patrick Goldschmidt mentioned the arrival of the tramway at the capital’s railway station. Goldschmidt stressed the “beneficial” impact and reminded the public that all the changes that this implies for the AVL network can be consulted on the capital’s website.
