In 2018, the Ministry of Defence launched a survey to find out more about Luxembourg's perception of and satisfaction with its army.

In a reply to a parliamentary question by Dan Biancalana, Minister of Defence Francois Bausch specified that the survey was launched in June 2018. Almost 1,200 individuals participated - some of them are members of the army, others are members of the general public.

Whilst participation was optional for army personnel, it transpires that 650 soldiers and other military staff participated. In terms of the survey's findings, Bausch explained that it demonstrated that the public remains largely unaware of the army's ongoing missions and projects.Military staff also hope for improvements in internal communication.

72% of the survey participants would like to know more about the army's work, Bausch said. One question saw respondents give contrasting answers, namely whether military service can prepare an individual for professional life.

58% of participants believe that the army's job made sense for society as a whole. Of the surveyed soldiers, 58% said that they felt they were satisfied by doing a multi-faceted job inside the army. However, only 49% of the surveyed army staff believe that team spirit is  good at the Herrenberg military headquarters.

All these results were initially only shared inside the army. Bausch detailed that the authorities then concluded that it would be better to inform the public more about Luxembourg's military missions.
