The Roads and Bridges Administration announced that a 70km/h speed limit would be put in place at Grouft and Stafelter, and both tunnels will be reduced to one lane in both directions from Friday 30 January. It is not yet known how long these restrictions will be in place.

A recent inspection revealed abnormal wear and tear to the ventilation propellers.

In 2015, a similar situation occurred, prompting the closure of both tunnels for over 3 months.

An RTL article at the time quoted the Roads and Bridges Administration as saying the new equipment would last at least ten years.
