Planning Familial operates three centres in the Grand Duchy, located in Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Ettelbruck. The organisation’s main objectives include promoting sex education and serving as a resource and contact point for all matters related to sexual health.
Last year, over 4,000 individuals utilised the services provided by Planning Familial, marking a significant increase of approximately 23% compared to 2021. Within the same period, the organisation’s doctors conducted nearly 11,600 examinations and administered 1,330 pregnancy tests.
Moreover, more than 1,100 people sought psycho-social support from the organisation, including 60 individuals who were victims of sexual violence. The majority of these cases involved minors, with half of the victims being under the age of 12.
One of Planning Familial’s ongoing missions is to advocate for better access to abortion within Luxembourg’s constitution. It calls for a reform of the abortion law, authorise abortions up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, and the removal of the reflection period following a consultation with the doctor.
In 2022, the number of abortions performed in Luxembourg rose by 17% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 559 cases. The average age of women seeking abortions is 28, although six of them were under the age of 16. On average, the abortions occurred at approximately 4.25 weeks into the pregnancy.
Additionally, the organisation continues to distribute free female hygiene products, including 4,000 tampons, 140 menstruation cups, and 80,000 pads. These products are available not only at the centers but also at the offices of Red Cross, Caritas, and Doctors of the World.
