At the end of 2022, some 864,000 francs were still circulating in the form of banknotes, worth around 5 million euros. Nearly 800,000 100-franc notes are still around, worth 2 million euros in today’s money. There are also more than 10,000 5,000-franc notes in circulation, worth approximately 1.3 million euros.
The Minister of Finance, Yuriko Backes, confirmed the above in response to a parliamentary question submitted by LSAP MP Mars Di Bartolomeo.
Franc notes can still be exchanged at the Central Bank of Luxembourg, which means the number of banknotes in circulation tends to drop slightly year on year. Belgian francs may only be exchanged for euros at the Belgian central bank in Brussels.
Thus far, the BCL is yet to set a deadline to end the exchange of Luxembourg francs. Coins, however, were only valid for exchange up until 31 December 2004.
