90% of patients have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a metabolic disease often caused by weight, lack of exercise, and poor nutrition.
Only 8-10% of diabetics suffer from Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease leading to pancreas failure, and requiring regular insulin jabs.
Aside from insulin, many diabetics also rely on other medication and devices to measure blood-sugar levels. Furthermore, a special diet and regular exercise might be needed to keep the disease in check.
In light of the global awareness day, several Luxembourgish hospitals will hold information meetings on Monday:
