In total, thirty-three municipalities are participating and inviting residents to pick fruit from trees located on communal land clearly marked with a yellow ribbon.
The fruits and nuts of these trees are available to the public who “can come and pick them” and enjoy them fully, provided that these foods are reserved for private use.
This is the first campaign of its kind in Luxembourg. The authorities have notably been inspired by a similar project in Germany, which has been around for several years now. The aim of this movement is to motivate people to commit themselves to fighting food waste.
This first edition will only take place on trees located on communal land before the concept is extended to individuals wishing to share their fruit with others.
More than 3,000 trees will be decorated with a yellow ribbon so that citizens can come and pick apples, pears, (cherry) plums, quinces, grapes, nuts, greengages, or chestnuts and avoid having all this fruit end up on the ground.
However, climbing trees and using ladders is forbidden, the tree must not be damaged during the picking and citizens are asked to pick only what they actually intend to eat.
A tour of the Yellow Ribbon campaign and a map of participating municipalities can be found at www.antigaspi.lu. The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste launched by the UN will be held next Wednesday all over the world with concrete actions to raise awareness on this subject.
