RTL’s photographers joined a number of Buergbrennen celebrations across the nation to capture the traditional cross burning in a bid to wave off winter, a month before spring is set to officially begin on 19 March.

Traditionally, Buergbrennen takes place on a Sunday, or “Buergsonndeg”. However, in recent years, many municipalities have opted to hold the bonfires on Friday or Saturday evenings. One of the largest celebrations took place on Sunday in Niederanven.
