Begging, road tax, public crèches17 new petitions open for signatures

The Chamber of Deputies has published 17 new petitions available for signatures on its website on Friday, covering a multitude of topics.

The new petitions have until 22 February to gather at least 4,500 signatures in order to be eligible for public debate in the Chamber.

In the wake of the begging ban introduced in Luxembourg City, one petition calls for begging to be authorised everywhere, at any time of day.

A second petition demands for Luxembourgers living abroad to become eligible to stand as candidates in the legislative elections.

A number of petitions tackle the topic of mobility, with one demanding a tax sticker for vehicles registered abroad and circulating in Luxembourg. The revenue from this tax should be used exclusively to support the transition to carbon-neutral mobility, as well as modernising Luxembourg’s roads and transport infrastructure.

One of the petitions calls for more realistic public transport timetables, while another demands more affordable taxi prices, or the introduction of a system such as Uber. One petitioner requests higher fines for vehicles illegally parked in disabled spaces, and another suggests parking should be free for parents visiting their child in the neonatal or paediatric hospital wards.

Another petitioner suggests a full reimbursement for glasses by the National Health Fund, due to their essential nature.

Due to the lack of capacity in public nurseries, parents are often forced to enrol their children in private crèches. One petition calls for more public daycare centres in Luxembourg, rather than private establishments where “the linguistic choice is not necessarily varied and Luxembourgish is not the predominant language”.
