15 municipalities took part in the campaign and many new street signs bearing female names were put up on Monday.
Until the end of the month, seven streets in the town of Schifflange will be named after female activists, politicians, and members of the resistance. Historically, Schifflange is strongly associated with the resistance during the World War II. Rue de la Montagne, for instance, thus became Rue Anne Frank.
Until the end of March, the "Hedinger Strooss" will be named after Astrid Lulling, who was mayor of Schifflange from 1970 to 1985.
In Dudelange, 11 streets have been renamed after remarkable women for three weeks. Rue Kennedy thus became Rue Triny Bourkel, an athlete who participated in the Olympic Games.
About two years ago, a new district was created at the Kräizbierg in Dudelange. It is called "Op Lenkeschlei" and all the streets in this district are named after a local female personality.
Taina Bofferding, who serves as both Minister of Equality between Women and Men and Minister for Home Affairs, expressed delight over the symbolic action on RTL Télé on Monday evening.
The Minister, who was a guest of RTL Télé's news show "Journal", believes that in the future, more streets and squares should be named after women. In that sense, she welcomed the joined campaign by the Luxembourg Association of Cities and Municipalities (Syvicol) and the National Women's Council.
A great deal of progress has already been made in Luxembourg, Bofferding explained, however, the workplace still remains one of the main issues. The Minister pointed out that one in three women reduce their working hours from the age of 30, and a lot of women also do a lot of part-time work, contrary to men. Bofferding thinks that this is where society needs to move forward because the needs of today's families are different. They no longer necessarily want to have to decide between work and family. They would like to have both and, as policymakers, Bofferding concluded, it was obviously up to them to provide families with the framework for that.
