The shipment, which arrived in Luxembourg by plane, was declared as “decorative cushions”, yet when customs officials opened the package, they found nothing other than 123 kilogrammes of cannabis.

“The French authorities were informed immediately. The drugs were seized, sealed, and destroyed in accordance with regulations,” wrote the prosecutor’s office on Thursday.

The immense quantity was clearly beyond the scope of individual or occasional consumption, and could only have been designated for “structural, large-scale sales activity.” Deliveries such as these require great “logistical, financial and personnel resources”, characteristic of organised drug networks. This type of organised crime generates huge profits and is often used to finance other forms of criminality.

The intervention in early March is a testament to international cooperation in tackling drug smuggling, as well as the vigilance shown by customs officials, the prosecutor’s office said in its statement.
